Paediatric Oncology
The Paediatric Oncology division, which started functioning in 1982, caters to the needs of all children below the age of 14 years registered in RCC. The Division looks after approximately 600 new cases and around 25,000 out patients annually. There is a 43 bedded paediatric oncology ward with an annual inpatient load of around 1400. The division also hosts a four bedded state-of-the-art ICU with two ventilators. The Division puts in tremendous effort not only for providing comprehensive medical care but also for providing financial, social and psychological support to the affected children and their families.
Clinical Services
- Outpatient services: The Paediatric OP functions from Monday to Saturday. The OP timings are from 9 am to 4.30 pm. Patients being attended to in the OPD include newly registered patients, patients undergoing treatment, patients with complications and patients under follow up. The total number of patients attending the OPD is around 80 - 100/day.
- Inpatient services: Around 1400 patients get admitted every year in the Paediatric Oncology ward. Patients get admitted for evaluation and diagnosis of malignancies, administration of chemotherapy including high dose chemotherapy in acute leukaemia and management of complications and emergencies.
- Procedures done: There is a separate room adjacent to the ward for performing procedures like bone marrow studies, lumbar puncture and FNAC and intrathecal drug administration.
Academic activities
- The Division started DM Paediatric Oncology course in the year 2012 with an annual intake of 2 students.
- The Division also provides training to postgraduate trainees in Paediatrics and Radiotherapy from within RCC and from other institutions including various Medical Colleges in Kerala.
- Regular discussions regarding management of inpatients are conducted every day from 10 am to 10.30 am.
